Most people’s vision of retirement is culturally imposed, and they have a sense that they should stop working and travel or play golf,” says Brent Kessel, author of It’s Not About the Money: Unlock Your Money Type to Achieve Spiritual and Financial Abundance (HarperOne, 2008) and president of the wealth management firm Abacus Wealth Partners. “But for most people who have been making a contribution [during their working lives], what’s most fulfilling is continuing to make a contribution of some kind.”
“To Retire” or “I’m Retired” – what does this all mean? Most of us have a vision of retirement that was formed over the years that is, well, not going to happen to most of us. I believe you should reinvent yourself in retirement.
We need to be thinking of retirement as the next chapter, not the goal. Its a new road not a destination. For this your going to need some training, some experience, and a road map. Your entering the next chapter of your lives, your are not checking out. Many people discover their new passion and reason for getting up in the morning during their retirement.
What a great time to go back to school, to learn a new skill, or to follow an older dream.
Some retirement tips that work!
EXPLORE your options, your lifestyles, new and old friends. This is the second half of your life. Make it count! Look for both pleasure AND meaning in your life.
DEVELOP your dreams, your ideas, your old plans that life interrupted. Do what you love to do, make choices based on a set of purpose, Set priorities and work on the ones at the top. Develop a send of accomplishment – not a financial one, but a self fulfillment one.
MANAGE your finances as if you were going to live to 100. This is not the time to keep your head in the sand. Be realistic an open about your needs. Then make a list of what you can and cannot do. There will be tradeoffs, and only by listing all the needs and wants you have will you be able to figure it out.
DO IT – long before the Nike slogan I have been advising clients to just DO IT. You can’t steer if you are not moving. You need to get out of bed and DO SOMETHING.
Reinvent yourself in retirement!
