Mesothelioma – The Cancer Ticking Time Bomb

Mesothelioma

Since 1974 the 5 year survival rate for all cancers tracked went from 49% to 68% (National Cancer Institute). If you are going to get cancer, get Prostate Cancer – the 5 year survival rate is over 99%, and thyroid cancer’s 5 year rate is 98%. On the other hand pancreatic cancer is at the bottom of the list at around 7% followed by cancers of the liver or lung at 18%. Keep in mind that these are five year rates, that is, the percentage of people that are still alive 5 years after diagnosis. But when we ak about survival rates, one of the more unusual cancers is malignant mesothelioma. This is because:

  • The major cause of malignant mesothelioma is known, and
  • There are attorneys who will help those diagnosed with this cancer get large money settlement once they are diagnosed.
  • Some patients are not diagnosed for up to 40 years after exposure to asbestos

Since mesothelioma often “hides” in the body for many years, sometimes for up to four or five decades, when it it finally is diagnosd, the survival rate, depending n the stage the cancer is in, can be very short. This is because the cancer may have spread from the primary area to other parts of the body.

In malignant mesothelioma malignant (cancer) cells form in the thin layer of tissue that covers the lung, chest wall, or abdomen.

The major cause of malignant mesothelioma is being exposed to asbestos over a period of time. This includes people who were exposed to asbestos in the workplace and their family members.

After a person is exposed to asbestos, it usually takes at least 20 years for malignant mesothelioma to form. This “ticking time bomb” type of cancer has a large trust set up for settlements and there are attorneys that specialize in only asbestos related disease. And don’t think that just because the use of asbestos has been banned that there are no more cases.  First it often takes 20 years to diagnose the disease and, secondly, there are many things that still have asbestos content. It has been mined since the 1800’s and was used in insulation, floor tiles, brake pads, paints adhesives, plastics, and some fillers. The World Trade center was full of asbestos that was released on 9/11 to the atmosphere.
